A Free ASL Intro Course - for Everyone!

ASL stands for American Sign Language. Anyone can start learning ASL and help to communicate with and be more inclusive of deaf people and others who use ASL to communicate. It's easy - and fun! Learn on your own schedule by yourself or follow the free course outline and teach a class at your school, camp, or other organization.

C is for Can

 Can you imagine how it would feel if you could only communicate with 1 in 1,000 people around you? That's about the percentage of Americans who speak ASL. By taking steps to learn this amazing language, you can help deaf people and other ASL speakers better communicate with the world around them and help to create an inclusive community. You can do it!

T is for Teach

Time to teach! You don't need to know ASL to help bring a fun ASL class to your camp, school, after-school program, library, or other organization. Everything you need to teach a fun, 10-hour course is here on this website. Learn along with your students and explain that sometimes the teacher doesn't know everything, we just learn together. By organizing the group and helping them to understand and practice the curriculum, you can help everyone learn - and you'll learn along with them. Just follow the lesson plans that are included here. You are welcome to use them for free - but please let us know where you're teaching the program so we can add you to the map! 

How To Use this Website

If you want to start learning ASL on your own, go to the "self study" page and get started! If you would like to help your group learn ASL, go to the "teach a class" page and download the lesson plans and course materials. You can use the materials for free! The course presented is 10 1-hour lessons, but you can of course use whichever portion of the course you like. It is adaptable to all age levels, but designed for elementary through high-school students.

There are lots of free online classes out there for ASL - some are linked below! You may find their classes are better for self-study and are more in-depth. This course is particularly designed to let you bring ASL to a group of students without knowing ASL yourself, so that we can inspire more people to learn to communicate with deaf people in their communities.
