About ASL Intro Course
I should start by saying that I'm not deaf. I have been studying ASL for four years and I designed this ASL course to teach in my community. Then I thought that I should share it so that other people who are interested in ASL may be able to help get others interested and share it with their communities.
It's important to remember, when you are teaching a language that isn't your native language, that you don't know everything. Deaf culture includes a strong cultural identity, and it's not a culture that non-deaf people can represent. All we can do by offering this course is say that we're interested in learning more and taking the first steps to making ourselves able to communicate with deaf people! So I encourage you to seek out advice from the deaf community if you are unsure about deaf culture and to make it clear to students that you are not a representative of deaf culture or an expert in ASL, but just someone who is interested in learning and wants to help open the door to communicating with others in our communities. |
About me.I am a high school senior from Calabasas, CA. I am passionate about building inclusive communities, hearing new perspectives, and giving others space to share their voices. My goal someday is to work in education and journalism to improve the inclusiveness of education worldwide and to help disabled and minority students find representation and accommodation in their educational experience.
